Yam Festival Road Race - Trelawny

Its that time of the year again when Christ, Easter eggs, kites, bun and cheese are the hot topics. What was also hot (temperature and otherwise) on Sunday was the Trelawney Yam Festival road race. This race was put on by the organizers of the yam festival, and started in Falmouth and ended in Albert Town, Trelawney.

The course started out flat, but after the first 5 Km, the profile kicked up, and so did the pace! Furious attacks by Mario Hall of Performance Cycle club quickly carried the elite group up the slopes, swallowing the open class riders that started minutes before.

The aggressive riding wore the pack down and facilitated a 10 man break away. The attack never ceased as Martin Dennis and Oniel Samuels both broke away on separate occasions to be caught minutes after. The lead group started to dismantle on the bottom of the climb to Albert Town when Jasset Bromfield attacked. Only 3 could stay on, Oneil Samuels, Raydeen Lawson and Dean “Flowers” Martin.

The 4 man lead group could not last long as Oneil and Jasset kept attacking, and eventually rode away. It came down to a sprint finish, and Jasset, who had won the event in 2003, took the top prize as Oniel followed closely behind in 1hr 39 min 28 sec. Raydeen and Dean came in shortly after for 3rd and 4th place respectively.

Here are the Official Results:
