After a five year absence, track cycling is back! For many, track cycling had become just a memory. I personally have never even been to a cycling meet at the stadium. The surface had been damaged due to work done on the infield of the stadium and the natural erosion of the track.
Getting the cycling track back on "track" was one of the major tasks that the Federation had set to accomplish by 2006. We had hoped to get assistance from the various sporting bodies and the various groups associated with cycling, but we were looking in the wrong direction. A few benevolent cyclists provided crucial raw materials (thanks Marzouca Lighting and Stephen Delapenha) and allowed a small group of volunteers to carry out the mammoth task of renovating the cycling track. It took 5 months just to get the surface in a suitable riding condition. Their hard work has paid off big time. The riders, the media and dormant cycling fans responded overwhelmingly to the return of the track.
The exceptional performance of the National Team as well as the upcoming Pan American games has also sparked additional interest.
The Federation hosted the first National Championships, and the performance of our younger athletes was encouraging. Please check the results page for the details.
