Blue Mountain Downhill! March 08, 2010

JCF and BikeNutz promoted this downhill race for mountain bikes on the slippery but straightforward Maryland track on Sunday.

It produced the expected result with SMORBA’s Andy Giles winning narrowly from team mate Jon Gosse. Both of these riders have mixed it with the world’s best downhillers in the past and are the promoters of the now famous Fatta Tire Festival in Ocho Rios.

However Amador Gilman, from BikeNutz, slipped and slid to third place, minus the correct tyres, edging closer to these two specialists, displaying the skills he developed in motor cycling.

It was also a family affair for the Gilmans with wife Kenesha winning the ladies title and daughter Sianne winning the junior race.

The ageless David Linehan duly won the Masters race, clad in a splendid full downhill outfit, known in the business as “full body armour”. He commented: “I may not be the fastest, but I am the prettiest”!

Andy Giles and David Linehan are bound for the World Masters Championships in Brazil in September and already have an encouraging degree of sponsorship for what will be an important first appearance for Jamaica at this level as they work to develop the BMX and MTB sport for Jamaica’s young talent.

The next important mountain bike meet will be in conjunction with this year’s Jakes Off-Road Triathlon. Bikers will be linking up with runners and swimmers for the triathlon and in the evening competing in an up hill “trial’ type event and then a conventional downhill race on the famous “Big Groun” hill. Sunday of the weekend will feature the all-comers bicycle bash for local riders, in conjunction with the next cross country race for the pros in the Jamaica MTB championships.
